Riding in winter doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. The OMW Boot was born out of asking riders what they needed to maximize their experience on and off the bike during a winter’s ride. To do this we partnered with the waterproofing innovators at OutDry and took the waterproof barring to the very outside and surrounded the foot with the most thermally efficient insulation possible. We then made that toasty interior removable for easy drying. In an emerging sport lacking products designed specifically for the athletes, we created, tested and verified (via 3M Test Labs) the “most thermally efficient winter cycling boot on the market.”

A ‘core layering’ approach quickly gained favor with riders as it made use of the same versatile system they use on their core. To keep the cold and water far away from the foot we partnered with OutDry and worked with their engineers and the factory to solve the complexities involved with using the technology in a two-piece boot system. 3M Thinsulate proved to be the most effective and stable insulation package to protect riders from the cold. (3M's labs later concluded that the OMW boot was indeed "the most thermally efficient winter cycling boot.") Additionally a new last was designed to create extra room around the forefoot while using a lower volume sole to achieve a nimble and versatile winter cycling solution.

Looking for a new, more connective way to ideate in 3D, I created this Dry Erase Mannequin. This tool quickly became a staple in early concepting and became a collaborative centerpeice between the design & development team. Recreating the team dynamic of a fit session with a fit model, we were able to work in a connective, fast-paced way. Even more, I created a means to project concepts onto the mannequin. A fast and powerful visual tool to communicate concepts, color and graphics.

The Rhythm bottom unit/outsole was created for the rapidly evolving mountain bike rider that demands uncompromising grip & performance on and off the bike. Working with pro riders and enthusiasts we created a lightweight and fast design that paired a stiff composite plate with high-traction Tachyon rubber outsole. Important design considerations were maximum pedal contact balanced with minimal lightweight rubber and stiff/fast narrow base with maximum dirt and rocks traction.

The PowerTruss plate elevates how stiff a composite sole plate can be. It was designed to give a value-minded rider the stiffness approaching carbon fiber plates with an innovative and iconic form. The PowerTruss geometry at the mid-foot is a first-of-its-kind micro-truss system that dramatically increases stiffness with minimal added weight.

The term “trail” has a loose interpretation in England. Not too unlike the early days of mountain biking when trails weren’t built specifically for the flow and rhythm of a two-wheeled fun machine, the trails we found near Kentmere, England were truly multi-use. Hikers, horses, cattle and sheep all follow a similar traverse across the wind-weathered land, ascending peaks in the shortest line-sight way rather than a thoroughly thought-through energy-saving method. We traveled to this island to test our new apparel in the land for which it was designed — snow, rain, mud, cold. And when we arrived, we found it in spades. Our photographer became our guide, taking us to a diverse set of trails. From the newly formed Ride Center, to the shale mines, and over to the tourist-haven Keswick, we tested the limits of layering, crossed the lines from waterproof to mudproof, and determined that former stewards of the land knew exactly where we’d become too tired and cold to continue, providing huts and shelter at the most strategic way points. As we completed our journey and drove back to London, we deemed the trip a success. Clothing caked in mud, bikes thoroughly worked, and grins from ear to ear, relishing in the warm delight of yet another piece of baked bread.

12/8/2013 Bontrager Ernest Jacket "...all I want is a jacket that's not too hot and handles the wind. (God, I hate wind.) Enter Bontrager's new commuter line, which is not only reasonably priced for cycling stuff, but reasonably priced...period. Weird, right? My favorite is the $110 Ernest Jacket. Overall it's a thin softshell, with windshell panels covering the chest and collar; nothing fancy, but it fits well over a couple of layers of street clothes and does what it's supposed to. No gusseting necessary."
